Maintaining Your Air Purifier: Essential Care Tips for Longevity

An air purifier is only effective if properly maintained. Many UK homeowners purchase these devices then neglect them, resulting in reduced performance and wasted money. Simple regular care ensures your purifier continues delivering clean air for years.

Regular Filter Checks

Check your filter monthly, even if the device doesn't have an indicator light. Hold it up to light and look for visible dust accumulation or discolouration. Most pre-filters (the outer filter) can be vacuumed gently to extend their life, but HEPA filters should never be vacuumed—this damages the delicate fibres. Replace HEPA filters every 6-12 months depending on air quality and usage.

Cleaning the Exterior and Inlet

Dust accumulates on the purifier's exterior and around air inlets, reducing efficiency. Wipe the casing monthly with a soft, damp cloth. Use a small brush or vacuum attachment to gently clean inlet grilles. Never use harsh chemicals or abrasive materials that could damage the housing or internal components.

Optimal Placement

Position your purifier away from walls and furniture that block air intake. It should be elevated slightly—never on the floor where it sucks up excess dust and debris. Central room placement works better than corners. Keep it away from moisture sources like bathrooms and kitchens to prevent damage to electrical components.

Managing Humidity Around the Device

Excess moisture damages air purifiers. If your home is particularly damp, consider running a dehumidifier alongside your purifier. Avoid placing purifiers directly in kitchens or bathrooms where steam is constant. This simple precaution prevents mould growth inside the unit and extends its lifespan significantly.

Following Manufacturer Instructions

Different models have specific maintenance requirements. Some allow pre-filter washing, others don't. Some have ionisers requiring cleaning, others don't. Read your manual thoroughly and follow its guidance exactly. Improper maintenance voids warranties and damages equipment.

Tracking Replacement Schedules

Mark your calendar when you install a new filter. Set phone reminders three weeks before the next due replacement. Keeping a simple spreadsheet of filter changes helps you spot patterns—if filters clog quickly, your home has poor air quality or the purifier is undersized for your space.

Professional Servicing

Most air purifiers don't require professional servicing, but some premium models benefit from annual check-ups. If your purifier becomes noisy, produces odours, or seems less effective despite new filters, contact the manufacturer's support team before attempting repairs yourself.

Warranty and Support

Keep your receipt and warranty information. Register your product with the manufacturer if possible—this ensures you're notified of recalls or issues and can access support more easily. Quality brands offer excellent customer service when you need it.

Proper maintenance is straightforward and inexpensive compared to replacing a purifier prematurely. These simple steps ensure your investment continues improving your home's air quality effectively.
